Why Endometriosis can feel like IBS

Endometriosis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can sometimes go hand in hand, but it’s also possible for Endometriosis alone to cause symptoms that mimic IBS.

If you’re struggling with both or just one of these conditions, understanding their overlap and differences can help you manage your symptoms better.

What Are Endometriosis and IBS?

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus.

This can lead to a range of symptoms, including:

  • Dysmenorrhoea - Painful periods with pelvic pain, cramping, and lower back and stomach pain

  • Pain during or after intercourse

  • Pain with bowel movements or urination

  • Menorrhagia - Heavy menstrual periods or bleeding between periods

  • Infertility

  • Fatigue

  • Digestive issues before or during menstrual periods, such as diarrhoea,

    constipation, bloating, and nausea

IBS  is a common gastrointestinal disorder

Characterized by:

  • Abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel movements

(diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating between the two).

  • Unlike endometriosis, IBS does not involve symptoms like bleeding or pain during urination.

Symptom Overlap

Both Endometriosis and IBS can cause abdominal pain, cramping, and affect bowel movements.

However, Endometriosis may also lead to additional symptoms such as painful urination or bleeding between periods, which are not typically seen in IBS.

How to Know the Difference?

Timing of Symptoms: Endometriosis symptoms often correlate with the menstrual cycle, peaking around your period. In contrast, IBS symptoms may be triggered by specific foods or stress and may not follow a monthly cycle.

Symptom Triggers: IBS symptoms can be linked to particular dietary choices or stress, while Endometriosis symptoms are more closely related to the menstrual cycle.

Endometriosis and IBS may present similar symptoms but require distinct treatment approaches.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are a holistic and comprehensive way to support your system and treat any underlying imbalances.
